What 42 CFR 483.95(g) requires
The federal requirements for long-term care facilities set a floor for nurse aide in-service training. The training must:
- Be sufficient to ensure the continuing competence of nurse aides, and be no less than 12 hours per year
- Include dementia management training and resident abuse prevention training
- Address areas of weakness found in nurse aides’ performance reviews and in the facility assessment, and may address the special needs of residents as the facility staff determine
- For aides who provide services to residents with cognitive impairments, also address the care of the cognitively impaired
Facilities must also train staff on activities that constitute abuse, neglect, exploitation and misappropriation of resident property, and on how to report them (42 CFR 483.95(c)). States may add hours or topics, so check your state survey agency’s rules too.
Using the tracker
- Set the training year: an aide’s anniversary year or your facility year.
- Add your aides, and tick the box for those who care for residents with cognitive impairments.
- Log each in-service session once with its topic, hours and attendees.
- Check the table: progress bars show hours, and missing required topics are flagged for each aide.
Frequently asked questions
How many in-service hours do nurse aides need each year?
Federal rules for nursing homes require at least 12 hours of in-service training per year for each nurse aide, enough to ensure continuing competence (42 CFR 483.95(g)(1)). States may require more, so check your state’s rules as well.
Which topics are required in nurse aide in-service training?
Dementia management and resident abuse prevention training are required for every aide, plus areas of weakness from performance reviews and the facility assessment. Aides who care for residents with cognitive impairments must also receive training on the care of the cognitively impaired (42 CFR 483.95(g)(2)–(4)).
Where is the tracker data stored?
In this browser only. Nothing is sent to us, so download the CSV or print the report regularly and keep it with your training records.
Does CE Courses Hub training count toward the 12 hours?
Our nurse aide courses earn a certificate of completion for their contact hours. Whether a course counts toward in-service hours is decided by your facility’s training program and your state, so confirm with your director of nursing or state survey agency.
